It is a packet-based radio-protocol that is intended to be used in low-cost, battery-powered devices. This mesh topology gives Zigbee networks high reliability and extended range. Each Zigbee device can transmit and receive data over the air, and can also act as a repeater for other Zigbee devices, forwarding data on to the next device in the network. Zigbee radios have a typical operating range of 10–100 meters, though this can be increased by using mesh networking. Zigbee is based on an IEEE 802.15 standard and is backed by a large number of vendors. The technology is intended for use in wireless sensor and control networks, and operates in the unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) 2.4 GHz frequency band. Zigbee is a wireless communication standard developed for applications where low-cost and low-power digital radios are required.
